The Curiosity Index: Week 36

I hope you’ve had a good week and are doing well. Here we are at the weekend. Today I’m running in the Stockholm Half-Marathon. Wish me luck!

You should read these

  1. Teaching is an act of hospitality. Mike Frost on why it’s always better to speak to people unmediated be a screen. “The sermon should be the fruit of a life lived in devotion to the Scriptures and to the doing of life with a congregation.”
  2. Passing this off as anything other than normal is disingenuous. Stephen Kneale on the challenges asylum seekers face in the UK. It’s not all that dissimilar in Sweden.
  3. Match king of Sweden. Talking of Sweden, here’s an interesting story about a shrews but ultimately corrupt Swedish businessman who dominated the world of matches.
  4. ‘Amazing Natural Experiment’: In This Amazonian Tribe, Brains Don’t Age Like Ours. Basically not everything about our modern developed lifestyles is doing us good.
  5. Lets’ keep that theme going. Meet Belize’s secluded Mennonites, a community frozen in time. Even the idea that they are frozen in time suggests this is a bad thing. It might not be. Read Use Technology Like the Amish as a follow-up-
  6. Outsourcing memories. Along those lines Jon Matthias reflects on how we are outsourcing the role of our memories to apps and the cloud.
  7. Inquiry, Not Science, as the Source of Secularization in Higher Education. Basically, if we adopt a posture that is afraid of questions people will ultimately reject that and the beliefs that went with it.

A Still Point in Time | Wildlife Commended. A flock of greater flamingo wades through the obsidian brine pans south of Walvis Bay, Namibia, with the grace of ballerinas. This image was taken hand-held from a fixed-wing aircraft. Flamingo are sensitive to noise and vibration and normally take to flight when disturbed. This is my default background music when I’m working.

You should watch this

The NFL is one of little pleasures in life. I’m not a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (I support another Florida team down in South Beach) but no-one does these hype videos as well as the NFL teams.

From the archives

Living in a godless culture in a God-filled world: “Resilience offers a path of resistance and choosing faith in a secular place is more radical than we think. We need bolder believers not more blended in ones.”

Have a great week.
