Welcome to 2025! I hope your New Year has got off to a reasonable start, whatever reasonable means to you! After a very mild November and December, winter has arrived in Stockholm with snow and minus temperatures and it’s time to crack snowboarding. This is the year I will link my turns and cruise confidently downhill.
I’ve taken a rest week from running but am eager to get cracking again and am setting new goals for reading, running and writing. We’ll see how long this optimistic mood lasts!
You Should Read These
A few New Year type posts to get you started and a few other things that piqued my curiosity.
- Sleeping Women by Sophie Smith is a powerful, and by necessity disturbing, reflection on the recent, and horrific, case of Gisele Pelicot.
- It would be nice if the facts about Africa changed in 2025 but I’m not hopeful
- I’m not yet sure how consequential this trend will be but it’s interesting to note nevertheless: How Intellectuals Found God
- The Secret To Better Habits In 2025 & You Need This Practice In Your Life by Ryan Holiday contain some generally useful habits and principles for sustainably building a healthy life
- Cahokia Jazz was one of my reads of 2024 so was interested to come across this about the ancient city of Cahokia.
- My 76 year old mother-in-law lives downstairs and over Christmas my 77 year old mother came to visit. So reading this by Kathleen Nielsen was timely: Honour Your (Elderly) Parents
- There can’t be too many people who negotiated the release of Jews from the Nazis and then later was assassinated by Zionists. Folke Bernadotte, member of the Swedish royal family, diplomat was one.

So what satisifies me? What I earn? What I achieve? What I own? What I experience? When will that ever be enough? Proverbs 19:23 tells us that knowing God, fearing the Lord is the place where my soul can be satisfied, because there lies life – everything else ultimately is death to us without God, it is rotten. We should consider it rubbish, Paul argues (Php 3:8).
I hope you enjoy your weekend. Do let me know if there’s something here you appreciated or if you see something you think would be worth sharing, let me know!
