The Curiosity Index 2022: Week 2

I don’t know why but I’ve been incredibly tired and weary this week, I think it might be a season shift or something but I’m dragging myself around like a sack of potatoes. Anyway here are some articles, photos, videos and other enjoyable distractions.

Many people ask me if it is not dangerous to fly with so many paragliders in the same thermal. It is demanding, indeed, takes some getting used to and is often stressful. When circling with countless pilots, I am constantly busy looking in all directions to avoid the risk of collision. With my left hand I hold both paraglider control lines and with my right hand operate my camera. Actually, I can only take good pictures on straightforward days, if the direction of rotation is to the right. Otherwise I have to hold my camera cross-armed, and that’s dangerous because I lose the overall visual picture for too long. Every view through the lens is a restricted optical moment without a surrounding overview, and without the normal sense of time and space. This picture was taken shortly after the air start at the Paragliding World Cup 2020 in Disentis, when all pilots had accelerated and were flying in the same direction. Also flying in this direction, I could pull the trigger relatively relaxed. In such situations, of course, everyone is on the gas. Everything moves fast and I certainly don’t want to miss the best moment. Why David Platt and James MacDonald are both wrong on money: “…giving isn’t a rule it’s a gift. It’s grace to be in the position where we can be ‘more blessed’, it’s an amazing thing to firstly have anything to give let alone be able to amply give. Giving is a joy. The act of giving itself is a source of blessing and of joy.“
