In Luke 4:18 Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah and announces that those words were being fulfilled – good news to the poor. There are four basic questions about that phrase that require answering.

1. What is the news?
2. Why is it good?
3. Who are the poor?
4. Why is this news good for them?

Let’s try those one at a time.

What is the news?

The Kingdom of heaven is near. God has sent His prince to usher in a kingdom and this prince, Jesus, will sit at the right hand of God and make all things right. This kingdom will fulfill all of God’s promises of a people who will be a light to the nations, living in justice, peace and love.

Why is it good?

It is good news because God has opened the way for all to come and be a part of this kingdom. It is good because it is based on forgiveness and not on repayment. It is good because it based on grace – it is about what the King and His prince have done. It is good because it is about gift not wages, adoption not slavery. It is good because it is open to all.

Who are the poor?

Those at the bottom. Those without strength, security, hope or resources to change their circumstances. Those without voice, protection, freedom or money. Those who grow up not knowing that life could be different.

Why is this news good for them?

For those who have been broken, Jesus brings healing.

For those who have been oppressed, Jesus brings freedom.

For those who have been shamed, Jesus brings dignity.

For those who have been crushed, Jesus brings hope.

For those who have been sinful, Jesus brings forgiveness.

For those who have been mourning, Jesus brings comfort.

For those who are weak, Jesus is strong.

For those who are guilty, Jesus is merciful.

For those who are afraid, Jesus is safe.

For those who are anxious, Jesus is able.

For those who are thirsty, Jesus is water.

For those who are hungry, Jesus is food.

For those who lack, Jesus is enough.
