Coronavirus

It’s been three weeks since I last wrote anything on here. I wish I could say that those breaks are unusual, but sadly they’re not. Mostly, they’ve been because I’ve not managed to figure out what to write or more importantly when to write. This last three week break though has been for health reasons. Both my wife and I have tested positive for COVID-19 and we’ve been dealing with the restrictions (health & societal) which has consumed most, if not all of our energy.

On the health front neither of us have had very serious symptoms and we’ve not once considered needing to call doctors or go to hospital or anything like that. For me it’s felt like the flu. But the flu, as many of us know, doesn’t feel very nice.

That was about 10 days and then there has been the leftovers. A dry cough that irritates your throat and makes you cough some more. Which makes you cough some more. And repeat until everyone is thoroughly fed up. The coughing is tiring and causes headaches. Again, it’s nothing major but it’s not nothing and it’s left me feeling worn out.

My wife has had a different experience with a whole other set of mild symptoms. Nothing particularly serious but constant and slow to disappear. She’s actually into week 6 whereas it’s only been not quite 3 weeks for me. That’s frustrating and reminds us how fortunate, blessed and grateful we are to mostly enjoy excellent health.

This has meant an extended stay at home for everyone. The kids are at home, which is a change in the Swedish school rules. Previously, because they had been healthy they were allowed to go to school but no longer. Basically, the presence of kids in the classroom who have sick relatives was too much stress for teachers and so the authorities tightened up and said they were to stay home. The days are short and dark, cabin fever has set in.

They’ve been amazing but it’s a challenging time when your parents are low on energy and you can’t see your friends or do your normal sports and activities.

I think we’re finally starting to emerge – hence the appearance of this blog – but it’s felt like time has slowed down over the last few weeks and things feel like they’re moving very slowly.

In the rest of the country the picture looks like this.
