To be a Christian is to be someone who has been redeemed by God to serve Him in this creation and in the next. It is to take seriously the charge God gave humanity to care for all that He called good. It’s not the only thing, it might not even be the main thing but it is definitely a thing. To ignore the world that God so graciously put us in, to ignore its fragile beauty or its cries of pain is to sin against our Creator God. Creation groans and action is called for.

The signals seem relatively clear, the climate is under intense pressure and at the very least humanity is not making the situation any better (but almost certainly making things worse on the whole) and this needs to change. Those most likely to suffer the worst of the effects of these changes, will as always, be the ones who contributed least and are most vulnerable, so there is a justice element here. Loving our neighbour in the world surely can’t mean being blind to the signs of destruction or deaf to the cries of those whose lands are most vulnerable to a changing planet.

It can be tricky for churches to know what to do and there can be a sense of futility in what we do. Our actions can seem so small against a problem so large. But small actions are better than inaction and added together it begins to mean something.
