One of the simplest ways to let Scripture speak to you is to turn a statement into a question. Now I have an opportunity to see where I line up and I can begin to meditate on that question or simply pray that God would make it so in my own heart.

Here’s Psalm 119:112 that I read yesterday as an illustration.

My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end

I can ask several good and searching questions from just this one verse.

1. What is my heart set on?
2. Do I love God’s commandments?
3. Is there anything I am not keeping/obeying right now?
4. Will I run the whole race before me?
5. What am I ultimately putting my hope in?

This is where the simple act of reading becomes a spiritual practice because now I can ask the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts, show me places of my heart that God wants to mould, shape, heal, correct. I can invite God through His Spirit into both the things I am doing or not doing but also into my deepest desires and hopes.

Scripture, question, reflection, prayer and back again creates a healthy dialogue. The Spirit begins to speak, Scripture comes alive and we take steps to walking humbly with our God.
