I was sent this by a friend, who I think was horrified by it. It’s from the BBC drama (which I haven’t seen) Years & Years. In this short clip we see a young woman take a big step into transhumanism. Take a look.

It’s quite an advanced transhumanist dream and not one that’s actually all that close. Although you could unlock doors with an implant.

What struck me was this fascinating insight (at 02.50) into what it might be like to be almost omnipresent and almost omniscient. In other words it reveals for a moment what it might be like to be God.

Technology always offers that illusive hope. That through the power it has it can make us more than what we are. It can help us transcend our limits, go beyond the confines of our minds and bodies into something more. Technology, we are told, can save the world. But we are no better at guessing the future than we are at learning the lessons from the past. Technology will certainly reshape the world, as it always has, but whether it will save it is an entirely other matter.

But let’s get back to God. One interesting development is that more than ever before we can imagine, picture, describe how technology might be able to provide a fraction of God’s big attributes (omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence). By doing so it should humble us or reveal our arrogance, but also simply demonstrate that the existence of such a being is perhaps not so far-fetched, after all we’re starting to think it could be us.
