The Curiosity Index: Books Edition


We have a little bit of everything in this literary edition of The Curiosity Index. From a Book So Big it Needed Its Own Furniture to a Tiny Bookstore On Wheels and even tinier book nooks.

And if you have enough glorious books then you should have a glorious library, like this one in Helsinki.

But with libraries come readers and so for every library system, you’re going to need a Crack Squad of Librarians Who Track Down Half-Forgotten Books.

Of course, you could always open a bookshop (although I can say from personal experience that it’s harder than you think). But I didn’t try the fundraising campaign of Sylvia Beach who in 1919 sent her mother telegram: “Opening bookshop in Paris. Please send money.” It worked.

But where there are libraries and bookshops there are the most nefarious of characters, book thieves.

And, of course, we need not just new readers but new writers so here are a few for those of you thinking of writing a book this year:
