The Curiosity Index 2026: Week 37

I’ve started reading a big book, which I haven’t done for a while, 570 pages await of Wade Davis, Into the Silence ((affiliate link)) about World War and Mallory’s attempt to summit Everest. I’m coming out of a reading slump and it feels good.

We’re watching the following in various combos as a family: Community, Reacher (season 4), The Mentalist and The Musketeers.

On the running front I’m at the beginning of a marathon training block so starting to ramp up to 60+km weeks which always feels manageable on the first run of the week, out of reach in the middle and then somehow doable by the time Sunday comes around.

You Should Read These

Seven handpicked articles

  1. On (Not) Making Very Important Christian People. Well said Dani Treweek.
  2. Lessons from a shipwreck. Tim Harford on the sinking of the Gustav Vasa and in particular why we shouldn’t build to two different standards
  3. One more on Wendell Berry, this time from Cal Newport: Wendell Berry and the Promise of the Deep Life
  4. Zacchaeus the Fig. Never thought about like this before.
  5. Alan Jacobs on the repaganizing of fantasy
  6. Are women better than men at endurance running? I find it hard to see how the BBC would write an article and invite men to declare the ways men are more ‘mentally strong’ or suited for a task than women, but here we are. And Jasmin Paris’ achievement in finishing the Barclay was incredible and rooted for her the whole time and was literally cheering out loud when she finished but it’s worth remembering she finished more than an hour behind that year’s winner Ihor Verys.
  7. I find it amazing that what we’re still discovering about the past and how often someone from the Bible shows up!

This Week’s Postings

From The Archives

I’ve recently discovered that some friends of mine hold to, what I consider, deeply disconcerting conspiracy theories and their view of the world is radically different to mine. What was more interesting was when asked if anything could persuade them of the opposite view, they said, ‘no way’. So there we were both entrenched in our convictions and no fact we could present would move us. And when you consider that memories can be unreliable well as the saying goes, ‘Houston we have a problem’.

I’d love to hear the interesting things you did, saw, read, thought this past week. Let me know in the comments.
