“It’s been a while and once again I find myself struggling with consistency in blogging. There’s a discipline to this and I’m not quite finding it.” – This on repeat.
I ran a half marathon yesterday. It didn’t go badly, but it didn’t quite go as well as I’d hoped either. Sums up quite a lot of life really. I spoke at a conference in Swedish in March and thought it went pretty well. I recently listened to it on video and thought my Swedish sounded awful and unnatural. Didn’t go badly, just not as well as I hoped. I think the key in all this is not to ground your identity in performance. It won’t always be brilliant. Ground it elsewhere and you’ll handle those days where it’s a bit ‘meh’.

One of the benefits of occasionally being a bit off deadline – is that you get some cold takes. A few things from months ago, which in the age of the internet might as well be before the ice age, and read because they’re still worth reading.
- How to Study the Bible Like an Evangelical: Principles & Practice: “Evangelicals are not content with leaving Scripture in the realm of theory; rather, they ask how its truths shape character, inspire mission, and invite us towards a deeper love for God and neighbour.”
- Finding Biblical Rest In A Busy World: “In a world that never stops, biblical rest is countercultural. It proclaims that Christ is sufficient, that salvation is secure, and that God’s grace—not our striving—sustains us.”
- The Generational Narcissism of Always Thinking We Face the Biggest Crisis Ever: “The world is shaking. Catastrophic developments. A revolutionary age. Multiple crises. This was written in 1960.”
- Stewarding Time Well: “So how do we steward time well in the face of myriad demands that fly our way from every direction? There are, after all, so many responsibilities that could simply take over our lives, if we just let them.”
- God of justice: “Some of the stories [of the Old Testament] can, I admit, seem a bit odd, confusing and often blood-thirsty, but when we put in the effort to understand them, we discover something more precious than gold.”
- The globalisation of electric vehicles: “Speaking of Nepal, it’s interesting to see them and Ethiopia in the top five for EV sales, albeit at smaller numbers. Those are two very different countries, but with some common features that explain their prioritising of electric transport.”
- One of the coolest things about honey: “..is its theoretically infinite shelf-life. 3000-year-old jars of still-edible honey have been found in Egyptian tombs”

Is picking up sticks on the sabbath any more or less serious than eating some fruit? It’s hard to see how it is, but if you were told not to, then it’s just as disobedient. Is it worse than a white lie, an angry outburst, a jealous thought, a lustful look, or self-righteous justification of all of the above? Probably not, but just as sinful because it is defiant.
