Recently, I was running with some friends and as the daylight faded and the shadows in the woods grew darker and longer they put on their head torches and we kept on running. I didn’t need to because I could just run in their light. They literally were a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). So even though I wasn’t using any light of my own, I wasn’t worried about stumbling.

Where does the light for your life come from? Where do you look to for wisdom to help you navigate your way through a complex and confusing world? What wisdom will you seek to give your children?

It can be easy for people to share their experiences and sometimes that might be helpful and sometimes not so much. They share their thoughts or the insights they’ve gained from friends or a recent book or podcast they’ve listened to. Sometimes this shines a faint light and sometimes it seems to snuff light out.

The most reliable, helpful and profound source of light that I’ve ever come across is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Christian Scriptures. Take this for example.

⁶ So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, ⁷ rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.⁸ See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

Colossians 2:6-8

This is a vision of people who have deep roots, strong faith and grateful hearts. These are people who are not easily deceived and instead of finding hollow people you find people with something good and nourishing on the inside!

As Christians we have a light that is worth running in. It’s not our own light or our own wisdom but instead it is a richer, brighter and everlasting light. So how do we do this? Receive Christ and continue to live your life in him. It’s about making our lives centre around the words, ways and works of Jesus.
