Pioneer CONFERENCE 2019

I don’t go too many conferences each year although sometimes I feel like I could spend my whole year doing nothing but go to meetings and conferences. So the ones I do go to had better be worth it, right? When you live in Sweden an end of September conference in Malaga is an excellent reason to go. Swapping autumn for summer for a few days was a pleasant experience and being able to eat outside late into the night was a treat. The second and more important reason was…

What Betsy Willis taught me about being a family of churches

Back in the 90s the expression ‘a family of churches’ was supposed to express something different. We weren’t a denomination like the fusty Baptists or the liberal Methodists. We weren’t a State or national church like the poor old CofE. But we also weren’t a ‘network’ like those business-obsessed Americans. No, we (and by we I mean Newfrontiers) were a family of churches. Now even the FIEC in the UK call themselves a family of churches, so it can hardly be described as cutting edge anymore. When I grew up…

Church planting in Europe

At the end of September I was privileged to be at one of my favourite conferences. I don’t go to many but this is my favourite. For one it was held in Malaga, so while Sweden was fast heading into a cold and wet autumn, for a few days I got to go back to summer. Malaga is also a beautiful city, with ancient Roman ruins, a marina full of expensive yachts, the castle & cathedral. It’s definitely worth a visit. But nice as the weather and location was, I’d…

A word of encouragement for Courage

As I prepared for the Courage Conference, I spent some time reflecting on the times God spoke to people calling them to have courage and not to be afraid. I shared this during one of the main sessions. Afterwards several people asked for a copy. So here it is. The words in bold are where I tried to add emphasis as I spoke but I didn’t read out the references.  There is no need for courage when all is at peace and all is calm. But this is not our…

Courage Conference

The reason I was in London was to be at our Relational Mission leadership conference. the theme was courage. It represented a step change for us as a family of churches. It was a move away from the provincial heartland in East Anglia to the heart of London. This I think indicates in a powerful way that we are committed to reaching the whole nation and the nations, London being one of the most diverse cities on the planet. Practically, it made getting there and being there, so much easier. It…

Recreating the Hanseatic League for spiritual purposes

I know cessationists are often curious as to how the prophetic actually works or what use it is. I think the following is a good example of the Holy Spirit speaks into something to give both energy and direction. In this case the planting of churches in Northern Europe. Hanseatic League Prophesy (v1) from Relational Mission on Vimeo. Here’s the Wikipedia entry for the Hanseatic League

I’ll let Mike…

Relational Mission: Starting new families

Last year I started (but never finished) a look through each chapter of Mike Bett’s book Relational Mission: A way of life. As a reminder here are the links to the previous 5 A real family Raising sons & daughters Everyone a witness The prayers of many A church for a broken world This sixth chapter is all about church planting. Relational Mission has its origins in Newfrontiers which grew substantially through church planting in many nations. Mike is clear that starting new churches is in our history, it’s in our DNA, it’s…
