Consumerism and preaching

Here’s an interesting perspective from Michael Turner’s essay on the preaching of Will Willimon. “Movies, other ‘relevant’ media, and communication tactics are merely business endeavours dominated by a consumerist culture, and preaching that attempts to use these technologies finds it difficult to free itself from the grip of consumerism. Consumerism, like the entertainment culture, also threatens the art of preaching.” Coming from a slightly different angle, John Piper would agree on use of technology in preaching.

TOAM: Day 1

My battery ran out on my laptop near the end of session 2 with Stef Liston and I never got round to charging it up so I’ve managed one session post and now I’ll think about the whole day. WorshipIn every session the worship has been wonderful. The people have danced, shouted, knelt, responded with rapt attention to Jesus. The songs and music have been a great mix of anceint past, recent past and present writing, the focus unrelentingly, unashamedly on Jesus. The times of sung worship have been water…

New Series: Questions of life

I recently read my friend Dave’s blog and was very humbled by this post. I had no idea the talk I gave had such an impact. It always as encouragement to a preacher to hear that God has used you to speak to someone. Anyway, I hadn’t given that talk much thought in recent times and the questions Dave lists are good questions. So I thought I’d write a series of posts reflecting on those questions, starting with the first one – ‘what about the consumer dream?’. The audio from…

Foundations of Grace

Last week, I preached on grace. It’s always challenging, I almost always think I’ve short changed the people and failed to show how great and glorious is His grace to us. Fortunately there’s grace to us preachers too. I think I need to spend much more time unpacking grace and preaching on it in the future. If it is the most important thing, then we should really not just know it but become people of grace. Anyway, any thoughts on what I missed out, did well or not well is…

Book Review: The Jazz of Preaching

I read this book by Kirk Byron Jones on holiday in February and it’s been sitting on my desk waiting for a review since then. I try and read a book on preaching on a regular basis as it helps me keep my thoughts on how to preach broad, gives me fresh creativity and hopefully makes me a better preacher. The subtitle to this book is ‘how to preach with great freedom and joy’ and asks questions such as can we preach with the same freedom and joy and honesty…

Generous Going

In the final part of my January series on discipleship I talked about Generous Going, following on from Discipleship, Generous Living, and Generous Giving (follow the links for the audios – except for the giving talk, not sure what happened there but we lost the recording. Shame) There’s an initiative that is based in the community of the trinity that takes us beyond ourselves to include others and draw them into the love of God for humanity. For us this draws us into the mess of human lives, the joys,…

Affluenza

A friend of mine, Adam, sent me the following tip: “Anyway, Josh Harris from Covenant life church (CJ’s church, now led by Josh Harris) has done a 7pt series on Affluenza on his blog – check out www.joshharris.com You’ll find a link there to a sermon he did on that subject too.” It’s a large and influential church and Josh is an influential young leader in the US so it’s good to see this issue being preached on there.
