The Curiosity Index (26.03.2015)

Some challenging words from Peter Leithart on baptism The Breathe Network is an excellent resource for Christians wanting to live more simply and more fully in a consumer culture. They’re inviting contributors to their blog. It’s an interesting question Is ‘Talking British’ That Hard to Understand? The Emirates are just crazy places when it comes to architecture and urban planning. Outdoor air conditioning and a shopping centre for kids shaped like a gift-wrapped box in Doha being the latest insanity. Here are some very cool hotels (hint hint, several are in Sweden)

How times have changed

I recently saw a photo essay for World Refugee Day which highlights the plight of the 10.5 million refugees. The whole collection is striking and worth looking at but it was this photo that stood out to me. It’s an Afghan refugee village outside Islamabad in Pakistan during a sandstorm. But it could almost have been taken at any point in the last few centuries, has nothing changed? What do you see? Or perhaps more importantly what don’t you see? I see open drains and sewers. By contrast my first…

10 ways to destroy or save the imagination of your child

JT gives a mention to a new book by Anthony Esolen called Ten ways to destroy the imagination of your child. According to that post, it ‘takes square aim at these accelerating trends, while offering parents—and children—hopeful alternatives. Esolen shows how imagination is snuffed out at practically every turn: in the rearing of children almost exclusively indoors; in the flattening of love to sex education, and sex education to prurience and hygiene; in the loss of traditional childhood games; in the refusal to allow children to organize themselves into teams;…

Talking about freedom

So last Thursday about 40 people gathered together from a variety of churches to think about freedom. What does it mean to be free? The event was part of the Breathe network’s Conspiracy of Freedom tour. We worshipped, listened to my friend Mark Powley on consumerism and freedom, and then we watched this video (let me know what you think) Then we talked and it was just encouraging to see people engage with ways we can live that go against the culture and towards generosity and simplicity. Try it out…

Conspiracy of Freedom

This video is pretty scary if you’re a parent (or more so if you hope to be one in the future) HT: Challies Which is why it’s important what we teach our kids about money (click here for a summary). We live in age of unparalleled consumer credit, where technology is inescapable and there’s no reason to expect that to change much any time soon. So, if you live anywhere near Shrewsbury, you might want to come to this event next Thursday (facebook event)to learn more about how we can…
