Devotional: Watch out for weeds

And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and it becomes unfruitful…’ Matthew 13:22

My mum has an allotment and from the spring she is there most days sowing, weeding, watering, and eventually harvesting the vegetables she grows. If she is away for a week or two she asks someone to water it for her, but there is always extra weeding to do when she’s back. It’s amazing how fast the weeds grow.

In the parable Jesus told, He likened the weeds to two things; the worries of the world, and deceitfulness of riches. I find that if I get too caught up in what’s going on around me, instead of investing in my relationship with God, then daily worries and life’s niggles and annoyances soon start to seem bigger to me than Him. The weeds are starting to grow up.

If all my efforts are on material things, maintaining what I have and always yearning for more, then that’s what takes up my attention, time and energy. God is being squeezed out. Luke writes, ‘where our treasure is, there our hearts will be too’ (Luke 12:34)

This world can seem so sure, so solid, so permanent. In actual fact our lives are a breath, just a heartbeat in comparison to an eternity in heaven. It’s worth making sure that the weeds don’t grow up and choke out what really matters.
