Devotional: Be still & know

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

God has used this verse to help me and guide me on more than one occasion in my life. The first was when I was applying for my first job after graduating from university. It was the night before my interview and I couldn’t sleep. I was nervous and anxious, then this verse came to mind. Being worried was doing me no favours. I needed to stop, to quieten my mind and soul. To know who was God and who was ultimately in control. And as my attention turned away from myself and towards God, I was able to worry less, rest more, sleep better – and get the job!

Being still is a conscious choice, it doesn’t just happen. We are surrounded by so many pulls on our time, so much business and noise. Being still isn’t being empty, doing nothing. It’s a positive choice away from whatever is taking our strength and energy – however good it may be – and refocusing on the One who gives strength. It is to choose to ponder and meditate on who our God is and letting that be what fills us.
