And if you have enough glorious books then you should have a glorious library, like this one in Helsinki.
But with libraries come readers and so for every library system, you’re going to need a Crack Squad of Librarians Who Track Down Half-Forgotten Books.
Of course, you could always open a bookshop (although I can say from personal experience that it’s harder than you think). But I didn’t try the fundraising campaign of Sylvia Beach who in 1919 sent her mother telegram: “Opening bookshop in Paris. Please send money.” It worked.
But where there are libraries and bookshops there are the most nefarious of characters, book thieves.
