Why gather? Friendship

Have you ever asked yourself, why you go to church? It’s a good question to ask from time to time. One good reason is friendship. In fact being friends is a great reason to meet together. Some people may think that friendship is an inadequate reason to go to church because you can be with your friends anywhere. And there might be something in that, it’s not a bad reason but by itself it probably isn’t enough. The thing is in the church we’re friends because of someone and for…

What if We Nuke a City?

One of my other hobby horses on this blog (I have several) is what I regard as the growing threat of nuclear weapons. Around once every ten years a new country acquires nuclear weapons. And now you can add Turkey to that list of potential countries. Turkey is a genuine concern. Wealthy enough to make it possible, with a significant enough military to protect itself, ambitions to be a bigger player, dictatorial tendencies and local threats in Israel, Iran, Russia and potentially Saudi Arabia. Right now, it doesn’t seem likely…

The only intelligent life?

I have a few hobby horses on this blog (which because it is my blog, I’m allowed to have) and one of them is the quest for other intelligent life. You’ll find numerous articles where I’ve stated my conviction that this planet may be the only planet in the universe with intelligent life on it. It seems an extraordinary thing to say given the fact that there are probably a trillion galaxies and each one with more than the 100 billion stars that our own Milky Way Galaxy possesses. So…

Church planting in Europe

At the end of September I was privileged to be at one of my favourite conferences. I don’t go to many but this is my favourite. For one it was held in Malaga, so while Sweden was fast heading into a cold and wet autumn, for a few days I got to go back to summer. Malaga is also a beautiful city, with ancient Roman ruins, a marina full of expensive yachts, the castle & cathedral. It’s definitely worth a visit. But nice as the weather and location was, I’d…

Walking with God pleases God

We’re working through the list of heroes in Hebrews 11 and last Sunday we looked at Enoch. There were a few eyebrows raised when people realised he would be the subject for our all-age service but in fact he’s an excellent choice as we explored what it means to walk with God. Key texts: Hebrews 11:5-6; Genesis 5:21-24; Jude 14-15 Enoch walked with God. Walking with God = talking, laughing, listening, crying with God, like with a best friend. When walking with someone you love and trust: sometimes you chat…

Good church leadership

I found this note but I’ve no idea whether it was notes from my own talk or someone else’s. If I’m taking notes from someone else I usually note that down and I didn’t in this case, so I think it might be me that’s responsible for what follows. Good leaders are a gift In Romans 12, Paul describes a whole variety of gifts that a church needs to be healthy. People giving generously, teaching, serving, encouraging, caring, using gifts in worship. Each of those gifts is to be used…
