You should definitely read of Lice and Men by Melissa Kruger – the Corrie Ten Boom story is just wonderful, inspiring and convicting. Andy Le Peau digs into what it means in James 1:27 to look after widows and orphans Once a year Britain suffers snowmageddon after about an inch of snow. So Why does a bit of snow bring Britain to a standstill? This, apparently, is the school of the future. It’s in Finland. This 450-Year-Old Painting Contains Over 100 Proverbs We Still Use Today. It’s art my kids could…

Soren Kierkegaard & the attack on Christendom

There are quite a few things Scandinavian which have shaped the world we live in – IKEA, Lego, Santa Claus but maybe not so many that have shaped how people in the west think. One man, a Dane, stands out above all other contenders – Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855). The influence of Kierkegaard can be traced as much in Friedrich Nietzche as it can in the early works of Karl Barth. Post-modernism finds an ally in Kierkegaard when he says things like ‘all truth is subjective’. Today Kierkegaard is as likely to…

Tyler Cowen has an interesting perspective on Trump, NATO & Germany Forget self-driving cars (which is happening, get used to it) but Airbus is planning on the self-flying car which is both very exciting and almost unbelievably scary (just imagine being very high up in the air in a machine piloted by another machine). This is what you need to know about running in snow. Snow is fine, the ice…not so much. Just found out that Don Carson is coming to Sweden in May which is a rare treat. And this has to be…

Notable Swedish Christians: Sven Anderson

Some years ago I came by the 2-volume Dictionary of Evangelical Biography (1730-1860) which I admit is a bit obscure. But I thought I’d trawl its pages for entries on Swedish Christians to learn more about its notable figures and history. We’ll take the series alphabetically.  I couldn’t find any more references on-line and the entry is short so I’ll repeat it in full. Sven, from Göteborg (1746-1816) was a Moravian missionary to the Labrador Inuit. He was a harness-maker by trade and a Lutheran before becoming a member of the Moravian…

I’ve finally been watching Planet Earth 2 (had to wait for the DVD). It is amazing. Just thought I’d put that out there. As America prepares to switch Presidents (Lord, have mercy). Here are two interesting (& short) takes on American Christianity by looking at the faith of the outgoing president and whether the market for Christianity in America is going bust. While over in Scandinavia, Finland is pushing ahead with its basic income trial. It seems to have a few main benefits – as an incentive for taking low paid, insecure…

Why aren’t we more worried about the nuclear threat?

In 1947 the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists created what they called the Doomsday Clock as a way of gauging how close humans were to totally screwing up the planet with tools of our own making. In 1953 when both the US and the Soviet Union tested atomic bombs sixth months apart, they set the clock at two minutes to midnight. The cold war was on and by 1986 the world had 64,000 nuclear warheads to worry about. By 1991 the cold war was over and the clock had moved back 15…

Dragged a few things out of the archive for today. I read blogs mostly through feedly and then save interesting articles & posts in pocket to use here. I have quite a backlog…. This on multiplying disciples & churches is excellent. If you don’t listen to the video just read the Q&A – very thought-provoking. Key ingredients: White hot faith High commitment to the cause A pattern of rapid mobilisation. Contagious relationships Adaptive methods Does belief in God enhance gratitude? The answer it seems is, yes it does. Derek Rishmawy has a…

Little late with this today and like all resolutions made at the New Year, I fear early slippage & failure. We persevere. Andrew Wilson does a good job explaining the bizarre story of Elisha and the bears. I’d missed the Elisha/Jesus type. There’s a real ‘gotcha’ moment in Proverbs versus President Trump Here are some of the best underwater photos of 2016 The greatest chess game ever. I found I could guess some of the moves but with absolutely no ultimate idea as to why they were good. I’m no…
