Invitations to the table

Over the past few months I’ve been studying and thinking about the role and place of the Lord’s Supper in church life, and although I haven’t finished with that I thought I would post some prayers, scriptures and service elements, all borrowed from Gathering for Worship: Patterns and Prayers for the Community of Disciples Come to this table, not because you must but because you may, not because you are strong, but because you are weak. Come, not because any goodness of your own gives you a right to come, but…

Furniture buying for church planters

When it comes to giving advice about buying furniture I doubt I’m at the top of anyone’s list. In fact I’d be slightly surprised if I was even on the list as my general disinterest in all things furnishing related is quite well-known. I like sitting in comfy chairs and that’s about it. However, having recently just moved to a new house where we needed to fill it up with furniture from scratch I now feel completely qualified to dish out advice to other church planters. Most important of all is the…

Scriptures for communion

Over the past few months I’ve been studying and thinking about the role and place of the Lord’s Supper in church life. What would you expect to see, hear, feel, encounter? What would be the characteristics of this kind of church? Thoughts?

What church looks like for us right now

This is how Sunday mornings look like for us right now. We invite friends over around 10:30 and we have ‘fika’ – cakes and coffee and the kids play, then at some unfixed point we gather altogether and sing a few songs together. All the children are currently four years old and under and can vary from just our two kids to as many as eight. We pick well-known songs from the internet (in either English or Swedish) and sing three or four. Then we tell a Bible story with…

The future of Evangelicals in Europe

I’ve been flicking through Patrick Johnstone’s The Future of the Global Church: History, Trends and Possiblities looking for clues as to the decline of the church here in Scandinavia as well as the rest of Europe. As Johnstone looks to the future he identifies five ministry challenges. See what you think: Ministry has been crippled by negativism after years of little fruit and a developing ‘minority complex.’ Where are the leaders of vision and faith? Aggressive secularists are marginalizing and even persecuting Evangelicals in particular. There is need for a holy…
