Devotional: Treasure the truth

Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. Luke 2:19

Mary, a young woman, found herself in a shed having just given birth to a baby that she’d had to put in an animal’s feeding trough because she had nowhere else for him to sleep. I imagine she was exhausted, in pain and aching after childbirth. Then a bunch of scruffy, out of breath shepherds show up with a tale of angels filling the skies, saying that this newborn, helpless, utterly-dependent-on-her baby is the Messiah, the Saviour that all Israel has been waiting for. I don’t know how much of it she would have been able to take in, to comprehend. But she didn’t dismiss it and push it aside. She treasured up all that these unexpected, uninvited strangers said and pondered it in her heart.

In all the excitement and business of this Christmas season, it’s worth not getting caught up and carried through on the tide of presents and Father Christmas and family traditions. Let’s follow Mary’s example and take some time to ponder these ancient truths and treasure them in our hearts.
